The “W” Trek is a world famous and beautiful hike in the Torres del Paine National Park, the route it takes is in a W shape (obviously) hence the name. It is also listed in the top 10 of longer walks, we were both really looking forward to this hike, even if it did mean carrying all of our tent, camping stuff, cooking things, food and clothes!
As lucky as we have been with beautiful scenery, the drive along the Carratera Austral through Patagonia has to be 1 of the best so far, green pines stacked high to form roads through valleys, bright snow capped mountains sit behind in the distance and to complete the scene, a wide, ice blue river which is a top 5 river in the world for rafting and kayaking (I checked on Google to make sure they weren’t having us on!).
Pucon feels like a Swiss ski resort, shops and apartments are built from wood and the mega resort itself lies at the foot of Villarrica Volcano and in between 2 huge lakes, camp site was next to Lago Villarrica. The town itself has lots of character and once we’d set up camp, we ran off to explore.
Checking into the hostel didn’t take long, we headed straight out for food for Bernice’s birthday – steak time, obviously Stu and I were very happy with this. The food was absolutely delicious, the best steak so far in South America we both would say and it was rare, a first for me.
